The GetUp! BlogsBudget 2008 - our climate analysisPosted by Ed Coper, May 14th, 2008This Budget was an incremental step towards a safe climate future - but unfortunately, we don't have the luxury of time to get us there incrementally. We need to go much further, and we need to do it much much faster. This should have been the world’s first climate change budget, following on from the world’s first “climate change election”. In a democracy, the people’s priorities, rather than the fossil fuel lobby, should direct budgets. With forty times as much being spent on defence as climate change, it seems that Kevin Rudd still hasn’t grasped the enormity of the... How would it affect our economy, and our lives? McKinsey & Company's report An Australian Cost Curve for Greenhouse Gas Reductions found that a "significant reduction in Australian GHG emissions is achievable — 30 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020 without major technological breakthroughs or lifestyle changes. I was a delegate at the Summit, in the Communities, Families and Social Inclusion stream. Like all of the Summit delegates I was there because someone thought I could make a contribution. In my case that was no doubt because I have been actively involved in disability reform in Australia and elsewhere all my adult life. I also have a severe disability - quadriplegia. As it turns out it would seem I was one of the few people in the 1000 delegates with a severe disability - at least one... Sharing stories was the focus of the night, with experiences and understanding crucial aspects of the discussions that took place. We encourage you to share your experiences on how your GetTogethers went and the feelings and discussions that emerged out of them in the blog below. Thanks for being part of the solution.... GetUp travelled with pro-Tibetan supporters to Canberra today to peacefully express our views in support of Tibetan human rights. The great thing about Australian democracy is that anyone can get up and have their say. The right of all people to express their views is fundamental but the expression today from many was unduly aggressive and inflammatory. The situation in Canberra reminds us of what is taking place daily in Tibet - the use of large numbers to silence and the inability of minorities to express their views in peace. From the...
