Your petition to be tabled in Parliament

Posted on the campaign blog , February 8th, 2006
It doesnÂ’t take much to see through the distortion and lobbying of the pro-life movement in order to understand what this RU486 debate is really about.

Over 4000 GetUp! member emails sent to their MPs make the issues startlingly clear: itÂ’s about access to a safe and effective abortion drug in a country where abortion is legal. But the other message is that this debate is about honest, accountable and transparent decision-making within government. GetUp! members are rightly asking why a non-medically trained politician with outspoken views on abortion should have veto control over womenÂ’s access to RU486.

And that is the collective position of five senators from five major parties who gathered outside Parliament House (see pictures) to receive the 8000 strong GetUp and Reproductive Choice Australia (RCA) petition yesterday. United with the other senators on the first day of Parliament for 2006, Democrat Leader Lyn Allison said:

“I am confident that parliament will see the wisdom of the bill … (It) is not appropriate, its not democratic, its not even more accountable to have a process where a minister makes a decision where there is no criteria, no process in place, not even any requirement to report to the parliament.”

Liberal senator Judith Troeth commented that it was the first time in her twelve years in Parliament that senators from right across the party spectrum were publicly united in support of a bill – and hoped that it would not be the last time.

With that kind of unity, it is worth considering whether every significant political decision in our federal parliament should be subject to a conscious vote!

The GetUp! and RCA petition will be tabled in the Senate prior to the commencement of the RU486 debate this week. Our thanks go to the Senators for making democracy 'real' – and for amplifying the voices of thousands of Australians in the parliament.

Our every ‘MP vote counts’ campaign continues right up to debate in the House of Representatives. So if you haven’t emailed your MP yet, click here.

hallo there- hey, I don't think you intend the pun you're making with 'conscious vote'.

I'm not really commenting to bug you about spelling- I'm writing to say that I very much look forward to Getup having a more than virtual presence in the arenas of political discourse in this country.

Members of the House of Reps receive >250 emails a day -- and only read those from their own electorates.

When sending emails in a campaign, can the sender's name and address be inserted in the subject line? This would maximise effectiveness of the email campaign.

Great work, and as a rural retiree out of the loop I'm so grateful GetUp gives me the opportunity to join worthy campaigns like this one. But I assume you meant a "conscience vote" not "conscious vote" in your article - or were you just being accurate and sarcastic??

Dear Martin,

I was very gratified to see the result of the members' bill in the senate re RU486. But the battle is not over as you know. This is not an argument about abortion, but about how we determine access to effective and therapeutic drugs in Australia. No health minister is qualified to make medical judgements. Especially judgements which have the potential to affect 52% of the voting population. I urge you to vote for the bill in the House of Representatives. It is the only democratic thing to do.

My local member has replied by snail mail, so they went to the trouble of looking up my address on the electoral roll.

"I would not be in favour of a committee of faceless bureaucrats deciding on the use of RU486.I would be more inclined to support the "status quo " where the Minister for Health decides on whether the drug is used . At least the MInister is accountable to the Parliament and the People"

I think he's being serious but Minister and accountable haven't been used in the same sentence for quite a while now

Well done!, getup team, members and bloggers.

Brett defined the issues at stake very well in his opening blog and it is absolutely imperative that the TGA regain the ability to administer the availability of this drug and any other drugs for that matter.

Make no mistake, if the minister retains control of this drug, it will become the thin end of the wedge. What will they want to take over next without due proccess?

The issue here is not about Tony Abbott or abortion, it,s about ministers taking it upon themselves to circumvent legally constituted laws and precedents as it suits them, without accountability or permission. This is a state of affairs that cannot be allowed to continue.

When will politicians understand that they are our employees, not the other way around. They are there to do our bidding not theirs.

We say, let the TGA do it's job, that is what it's there for and let it do it without interference.

I emailed Michael Johnson, the Federal member for Ryan by using the Get Up email system.

I have received a letter from Michael Johnson, hand written address to Michael Corbett, stating that he agreees that the decisions on RU486 should be with the TGA, and not with politicians.

It is great #1 that Get Up works, and #2 little old me, a nobody, has a voice and is heard.

Demcracy is wonderful. Now, how do I get rid of John, Peter, Tony and all the other Libs.

I, too, received a reply from my local member, Kate Ellis. Not only does she express support for the Bill but her letter is an articulate representation of the key issues. If you are in her electorate, let her know so that in debate she can communicate the widespresad view of her electors.

I live in your electorate and ask you to vote so that RU 486 is in the hands of the Theraputic Goods Association and not in the hands of our politicians. Whether one is pro-choice or anti- abortion, the administration of drugs and evaluation of who should take them is a matter for medial and health experts.

This issue of RU - 486 has nothing to do with representation by the parliment or the responsible minister and everything to do with Tony Abbot's personal crusade against the rational world.

Yes Tony will be there to make sure that those who are uable to make proper christian choices in thier lives will be saved from sin.

What I find particularly creepy is the hint of synchronisation with the debat on abortion that is bubbling away in the US.
