Time for common sense

It's time for some climate common sense. That's why we're launching this simple ask:

Invest more in renewable energy than you hand out to big polluters."

Yesterday Kevin Rudd announced more than a billion dollars in extra handouts and compensation to big polluters,1 bringing their haul to $8.4 billion this year alone2.

In comparison, the Rudd Government has invested less than half that amount in renewable energy.3

Investing in renewable energy means we don't have to wait for the CPRS to get started tackling climate change. And it means we can stimulate the Australian economy and create clean energy jobs for hundreds of thousands of Australians, starting right now.

1 - Yesterday’s announcement increased the buffers for big polluters across the board. The worst polluters will now receive 95% buffers. This amounts at least $1 billion in additional compensation to big polluters.

2 - The Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme White Paper had already given $7.4bn in compensation to big polluting industries.

“Never in the history of Australian public finance has so much been given without public policy purpose, by so many to so few”, said Ross Garnaut of the compensation to in The Age.

3 - Government press releases in the last week cite $3.9 billion "to support the development and deployment of low carbon and renewable sources of energy". $500 million of this is in the National Clean Coal Initiative, which leaves $3.4bn as a generous figure of the Rudd Government's renewable energy investment.
