Let's get down to business: Westpac

Professor Garnaut has made his recommendations for a 2020 target - and they're low. Even more incredibly, some business and industry groups are complaining they're too high! We know that business is better than that - and stands to gain from the transition to a low carbon economy.

We've selected 10 companies that are all members of the Business Council of Australia, an industry body leading the charge to weaken the government’s carbon reduction targets. Westpac is an exception to the rule - they have said they want to be part of the solution, not the problem.

Send Westpac's Managing Director and CEO Gail Kelly a message asking her to speak out on behalf of business, for a strong emissions reduction target. A public statement from their CEOs would show that the old contradiction between the economy and the environment is no longer working.

Below are some suggested points you might like to make.

  • Westpac is already ahead of the field in terms of climate change policy, and I’m writing to ask you to make a public statement about why your business supports strong carbon pollution reduction targets for 2020.
  • Westpac, as a major Australian company, has a responsibility to lead on climate change and to publicly call for stronger action from the federal government.
  • Westpac is a member of the Business Council of Australia, which has been strongly lobbying for low carbon reduction targets. Your public statement will dispel the myth that all Australian business are against strong action on climate change.
  • I am asking you to exercise leadership to publicly distance yourself from the polluting industry lobby and show that your company supports strong emission reduction targets and sees the business opportunities in solving climate change
  • Westpac has stated: “We firmly believe that understanding, measuring and managing the environmental issues which impact our business is not only the right thing to do by our community, it will also deliver more sustainable long-term shareholder value.”
  • Westpac has a strong corporate reputation based on your environmental and community leadership. Please uphold that reputation by making a statement encouraging the federal government adopt stronger targets to reduce emissions.
