The
Inaugural National Indigenous Students Conference has kicked off at Sydney University today It will be attended by two of GetUp's Interns who will report back on the unique event.
Our
Climate Torch Relay is currently being mapped out and will soon launch the next phase - so get your final nominations in now!
In other news this week, the Government's announced changes to mandatory detention are a major step forward however now legislative change must follow.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard has announced that the Government's main focus will be
closing the life expectancy gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians rather than recognising Indigenous rights in the constitution.

Climate Change Minister Penny Wong has stated that this week's discussion paper on a carbon trading scheme will
give Australians a "clear idea" of the Government's plans . The green paper will be released on Wednesday, partly in response to Professor Garnaut's Draft Report released earlier this month. Wong is emphasising that it is a discussion paper and not the Government's final policy.

GetUp’s submission to the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters has resulted in a success. The Committee today has recommended that
tax deductions on political donations should be scrapped immediately.
Former Federal Indigenous Minister Mal Brough has revealed that
the Intervention in the NT was pieced together in less than two days. A year later, GetUp campaigners are
reporting directly from the Northern Territory on whether the hasty plan has had any real results in Closing the Gap.

Aboriginal Recognition in the Australian Constitution received support today from NT Indigenous Leaders. They recall a promise made twenty years ago by former PM Bob Hawke to establish a treaty to lay the ground work for recognition and substantive change. Our own GetUp campaigners will soon return from the NT ready to report on efforts to

In Climate News,
pressure is building for the PM to review the Mandatory Renewable Energy Target (MRET). The MRET is as important as the Emissions Trading Scheme and needs to remain at a high target to ensure our energy supplies move away from fossil fuels.
