This week, 8 Indigenous leaders met with key politicians in Canberra to urge for increased funding for homeland communities, click here to see the video of their trip.
The bill to abolish detention debt was passed in the Senate on Tuesday with Senators Troeth & Fielding crossing the floor to support the issue that had long been campaigned on by Senators Hanson-Young and Evans.

Sign GetUp's campaign to Save The Homelands
Homeland communities mean better health and longer life expectancies, where locals are applying traditional knowledge to 'care for country' and tackle climate change. But these 600 areas are under threat as the government attempts to funnel people into just 20 'growth towns'.
Next week 8 Indigneous leaders from homeland communities are heading to Canberra to meet with politicians and present GetUp's petition - add your name now.

Today marks national Close The Gap day, a day of action to show support for closing the 17-year life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other Australians.
In a historic move, the federal government will tomorrow announce a formal statement of support for the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples - a statement the previous government voted against in 2007. You can find out more about the Declaration here.
Social Justice Commissioner Tom Calma today stated that the move of support should be backed immediately with a comprehensive national action plan to Close The Gap in health equality between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

The Rudd Government has come under fire for failing to deliver on the apology promise to Close The Gap in Indigenous life expectancy.
Delivering the first annual report to Parliament, PM Rudd defended the Government's record on Indigenous affairs in the last year but promised to work harder to end disadvantage in Indigenous life expectancy and announced $58 million to tackle trachoma in Indigenous communities.
The Government continues to come under scrutiny however for its continued suspension of the Racial Discrimination Act in the Northern Territory as part of the NTER.

Inaugural National Indigenous Students Conference has kicked off at Sydney University today It will be attended by two of GetUp's Interns who will report back on the unique event.

In other news this week, the Government's announced changes to mandatory detention are a major step forward however now legislative change must follow.
