Send a message of thanks

The bill to abolish detention debt has just been passed in the Senate with key Senators crossing the floor to support the issue.

Send your thanks to Liberal Senator Troeth and Senator Fielding and congratulate them for making the difference in getting this bill to pass.

With more reforms due for debate in the coming weeks it's important we take a moment to thank those who took the courageous move of voting on moral rather than party lines.

More Information:

  • Detention debt is the amount of money owed to the Government by ex-immigration detainees.

  • The detention charge severely hampers ex- detainees attempts to settle in Australia once released, placing a heavy burden on their mental well-being.

  • Concerns over the ability to repay the debt are sources of substantial anxiety impeding the capacity of immigrants to establish a productive life.

  • These debts can range from $45,000 to, in Masoud's case, $264,000. Clearly, newly settled immigrants don't have the capacity to pay such large debts.

  • Almost all of the debt is in practice not ever recovered, with the policy in often costing more to administer then what is collected.

  • In the coming months we need the support of Senator Troeth and Senator Fielding in order to ensure that policies such as not locking up children in detention centers are enshrined in law. We must also work to improve Australia's complementary protection visa measures to ensure we halt the practice of sending at risk immigrants back to their countries in circumstances where they may face persecution.
