Tips for writing to MPs:
Personalise your email as much as possible. Start by stating that you're a local resident of your electorate, and explain why transport and climate change:
- are important to you;
- affect your family and daily life;
- are particularly relevant to your local area.
We know that your MPs take personalised emails from their electors much more seriously than pro-forma emails. Here are some talking points you might like to mention - but we strongly encourage you to add why you personally care about fixing our climate crisis and our transport crisis.
If you’re a city resident, why not tell your MP about your latest public transport nightmare story? If you live in a rural regional area, maybe you’re angry that there's no public transport available and that the cars you rely on to get around are amongst the most fuel inefficient in the world.
Talking Points:
- We’re really worried that the debate on petrol prices is ignoring climate change and the need to transition Australia away from oil
- It is time to take national action to fix Australia’s transport system for the long term
- The federal government needs to start funding public transport, since it is now a national priority: it must invest 1/4 of the Building Australia Fund – $10 billion – in public transport, followed by at least 1% of GDP every year from now on
- Both parties must ensure the transport sector is included in the Emissions Trading Scheme
- Australia must legislate standards for cleaner, more efficient cars, requiring that all new cars sold in Australia be at least as efficient as those sold in Europe
