Last Thursday, thanks to GetUp members' support, a delegation of refugees went to Canberra to meet with politicians and share their experiences of living a life under the burden of detention debt.

The bill was passed in the lower house but unfortunately a vote in the Senate was delayed until the next sitting date in August. The Senators who met the refugees in Canberra last week will find it hard to vote against the bill - hear their responses here.

The Senate are due to debate the Migration Amendment Bill today to remove detention debt after some Opposition MPs yesterday indicating they would cross the floor on the issue.
A delegation of refugees are currently in Canberra meeting directly with politicians to tell their stories and experiences of suffering under the burden of this debt - donate now to contribute towards this!
After months in detention, legal refugees are regularly charged for their 'accommodation', leaving them with bills of thousands of dollars they are unable to pay. In fact the policy cost more to administer than is ever recovered.

After months in detention, legal refugees are regularly charged for their 'accommodation', leaving them with bills of thousands of dollars they are unable to pay. In fact the policy cost more to administer than is ever recovered.
The Government has proposed a Bill which will remove detention debt - but key Senators are undecided on the issue. We're sending a delegation of refugees to Canberra to speak directly with politicians to hear their stories and experiences of suffering under the burden of this debt - donate now to help make this happen!
