A chlorine dioxide leak at a Canadian pulp mill has caused an evacuation of nearby homes.

The Federal Environment Minister Peter Garrett has come under fire regarding threats to the marine environment surrounding the Gunns Pulp Mill in Tasmania.

Garrett has however stated that detailed modelling of the impact to marine environments will be completed before the mill can be commissioned.
