There's a chance that Australia could be about to see our strongest ever anti-discrimination laws. What's at stake?
1 - Protecting people from discrimination becuase of sexual orientation and gender identity.
2 - Making religious organisations follow the same discrimination rules as everyone else in many areas (so religious schools can't expel gay students or refuse welfare services to pregnant women).
3 - Preventing discrimination because of irrelevant criminal records, which particularly impacts Indigenous communities.
The new laws won't get over the line without broad support - click here to sign the petition to new Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, or for more information about this campaign, click here.
Thanks Rupert, but...
|Murdoch may have given up his right to vote in Australia's election, but he hasn't given up using his power to influence yours. The Gosford Anglican Church's sign perhaps said it best: "Thanks Rupert, but we'll choose our own Government." Together, GetUp members raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to make a massive ad buy, standing up to News Corp on millions of TV screens across the country. As it turned out, however, not everyone was as keen to stand up to Rupert as we were, so our ad was banned from the major commercial networks! Fund Hope For Mental Health
|Mental ill health is the biggest killer of Australians under 45. Of your closest friends, family and colleagues, about 1 in 5 will suffer mental ill health this year. But most of us will not discuss it or receive treatment. In order to help address this important issue, GetUp members made the largest healthcare reform in decades possible - we secured $2.2 billion for mental health reform.
Stay tuned for more on this - in the meantime, you can click here to thank your MP or see what we achieved together!
Ban Live Export
|After a shocking Four Corners episode, hundreds of thousands of GetUp members came together to campaign against live export of cattle - and within days, Prime Minister Gillard announced an immediate suspension of live exports to Indonesia. A quarter of a million Australians contributed and signed our online petition to ban live export making it our largest and fastest growing petition ever!
With the continuation of the live cattle trade, you can make sure all exporters sign on to a pledge ensuring no Australian cattle are exported to facilities that don't stun animals. Click here to email the Australian Livestock Exporters Council.
Looking for more to do on live exports? Check out the RSPCA and Animals Australia websites to see what else you can do.
Save Tassie Forests
After thirty long years of negotiation, industry and environmental groups are reaching final agreements to protect Tasmania's forests - now it's time to put the pressure on the government to commit. GetUp members put the pressure where it was needed most by emailing their MPs and putting this ad on the air .
