Will you support the Climate Act?

Tides are changing in federal climate politics.

With Independent MP Zali Steggall's push for a Climate Act, we finally have a sensible plan that means our Parliament can work together to solve the biggest issue of our time.

It's a strong start for action on climate, giving us an opportunity to shift the climate conversation from destructive distractions to productive progress.

Submissions are open until 5pm Friday 27 November - which means we don't have much time to make the most of this moment, and push for a new era of climate politics.

And for these Bills, quality of submissions is more important than quantity.

Will you lodge a unique submission today?
We'd like to see our Parliament progress climate policy with even stronger courage and vision, but the Climate Act legislation is a solid framework to get us started. It sets up a framework we can use to pressure our government for more ambition. Any sensible person could get behind it.

  • A Net Zero emissions target by 2050, with five-yearly economy-wide emissions budgets and develop five-yearly emissions reduction plans and five-yearly reviews of the target as things change.

  • Risk assessments and adaptation plans.

  • Technology readiness assessment, so that we know the existing and emerging ways we can reduce emissions, with the least risk and cost

  • An independent advisory commission (IAC), that can advise the Government, transparently and independently, on our national needs and plans.

  • Principles of fairness and equity to guide those budgets and plans.

If you're looking for more information, this overview of the Climate Act is a good place to start. You can also read the Bills here.
Remember to use these as a guide rather than verbatim in order to make your submission uniquely yours!

  • Start your submission by addressing the House Standing Committee on the Environment and Energy.

  • Tell the committee briefly who you are, where you're from and why you care.

  • Say why you support the Climate Change Act.

  • Express your views on a 2050 net zero emissions target, or call for even stronger action.

  • Provide comments and suggestions about what other countries are doing or momentum in your community.

  • Make a comment on parts of the Bill that are relevant to you.

  • For the most impact, make a unique submission - quality is more important than quantity.

Use the form to the right of this text (scroll down below if you're on your phone or tablet) to send your submission before 5pm Friday November 27th. Once your submission is recieved by the Committee, you can't publish or disclose it to any other person unless or until the committee has authorised it's publication.
