Hold coal and gas corporations accountable for climate pollution
As part of the Albanese Government's moves to reduce climate pollution, they've launched an overhaul of the safeguard mechanism.

At the moment, the Coalition Government-designed safeguard mechanism is a toothless tiger, allowing coal and gas multinational corporations to increase climate pollution.
If we can show the overwhelming public support for strong climate policies, we can push the Albanese Government to create a strong mechanism that holds fossil fuel corporations to account and forces them to do their fair share to reduce pollution.

The mechanism has the potential to be a vehicle for real reductions in climate pollution — if Labor's proposed overhaul is as strong as possible.
An overhauled safeguard mechanism can set strong targets for reducing climate pollution from coal and gas corporations. Accompanying regulations can ensure these corporations actually do their fair share to reduce their climate pollution.

Under the former Coalition Government, the safeguard mechanism did nothing to reduce pollution — it was effectively a licence to pollute.
Outrageously, the Coalition allowed multinational coal mining corporation Anglo American to double the climate pollution from one of their Queensland coal mines, without penalty.1
Now that the Albanese Government is looking to reform the mechanism to put a real cap on pollution, Anglo American "has concerns".2 They've joined multinational gas corporation Inpex in openly calling for carve-outs for fossil fuel-intensive exporters (like themselves) from Labor's pollution reduction policy.3
We cannot let these big polluters continue to get off scot-free. We cannot let them be the loudest voice in the room on this important policy.
The mechanism can be a vehicle for real reductions in climate pollution — if there are strong regulations in place to hold coal and gas corporations accountable.
GetUp's submission is ready to go, and to make it as strong as it can be, the submission needs as many people as possible to back it. Together, we're calling for:
1. Strong targets for big polluting corporations to start reducing pollution immediately.
2. No 'flexible' arrangements that have allowed big polluters to game the system.
3. No unfettered access to offsets to ensure real reductions in pollution.
4. No carve-outs for coal and gas exports.
