Shell's Powershop takeover

Oil and gas giant Shell's takeover of Powershop lets down everyone who switched to Powershop as "Australia's greenest energy company" — including tens of thousands of GetUp members.
Financial Review headline saying GetUp takes aim at Shell's new electricity provider
Supporting a big climate polluter is not what GetUp members signed up for. We're putting Powershop on notice that we are no longer satisfied customers and we will be shopping around.

While so many of us are doing the best we can to power our homes with clean energy, Shell is simply interested in attempting to buy green credentials to divert attention from their track record of being one of the worst polluters in the world.

Will you put Powershop on notice and consider switching energy providers? Let us know! Shell Plus Powershop Equals Scream Emoji
While we didn't get any notice of this change, we wanted to provide you with some potential options you might like to investigate:*

  • Amber — This new player aims to help you shift more of your energy usage to the times that wind and solar power are generating to build demand for more renewable energy.

  • CoPower — A non-profit cooperative that is member-owned and member-run, with a mission to tackle poverty, address the climate crisis and build community.

  • Diamond — This company's pitch is that they source more renewable energy than customers consume.

  • Energy Locals — Energy Local's pitch is that they have a fixed membership fee, no profits from your usage and they're owned by a super fund manager that only invests in renewables.

  • Enova Community Energy — Community-owned, they promise to give back to local communities, and never to invest in coal, oil or gas.

  • Momentum Energy — Momentum is owned by Australia's largest renewable energy generator, Hydro Tasmania and offers benefits for home or business solar owners.

  • * These alternative energy provider options are suggestions only, with decent reputations and information from the company's websites. It's important to do your own research to determine the best option for you and your household.

Greenpeace will release their new Green Electricity Guide soon, and we will update this information then.
At the time when most GetUp members switched to Powershop, the company was actively advocating for the Renewable Energy Target which was under attack from Tony Abbott and the dirty power companies. Powershop was independently ranked by Greenpeace as Australia's 'greenest energy company.' We even had a partnership agreement that helped fund GetUp's climate justice campaigns!

But now, Powershop is owned by one of the world's worst polluters, and has become the very corporation that its customers avoided in the first place.

Shell has blocked climate action for decades and continues to block it now by appealing a court ruling that it must reduce its emissions.

Shell is using Powershop as greenwash, but we're not buying it.

While so many of us are doing the best we can to power our homes with clean energy, Shell is simply attempting to buy green credentials to divert attention from their track record of being one of the worst polluters in the world.
