Equal protections for all

Right now, there is a bill being proposed that could allow religious groups to discriminate against others based on who they are.1

We know that many of our communities face prejudice for our culture, faith, language, gender, birthplace or the people we love.

The divisive bill is yet to be made public, but what we do know is that we need to send a clear message to politicians that we won't let them turn our communities against each other.

Can you sign the petition and join the call for laws that ensure people of faith, women, lesbian, gay, trans and intersex people are all protected equally from discrimination?
After the 2019 federal election, a small number of conservative lobbyists and politicians have been pushing for new laws in the name of 'religious freedom' which threaten to wind back longstanding protections for discrimination for other groups, including LGBTIQ+ people and women.

The key bill is called the Religious Discrimination Bill 2019. The bill hasn't been made public yet, but media reports indicate there's a real risk the bill could water down hard fought protections and give licence to religious groups to discriminate against others.

It's likely the bill will be tabled in parliament soon, so it's important politicians know that the public will only support a bill that ensure people of faith, women, lesbian, gay, trans and intersex peolple are all protected equally from discrimination .

We want laws that ensure people of faith, women, lesbian, gay, trans and intersex peolple are protected from discrimination.

That means laws that don't have exemptions that may override what is already in the racial discrimination and sex discrimination acts. Additionally, any federal bills put forward should not undermine existing state protections.

SIGN THE PETITION

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and Members of Parliament,

Discrimination causes incredible harm. We need laws that protect people of faith, women, lesbian, gay, trans and intersex people equally from discrimination.

That means laws that provide a shield of protection to those who need it, but that don’t hand organisations or individuals a license to discriminate against and attack others.

Any new laws should not increase discrimination, but rather bring us all together in mutual understanding and care.
