We believe there is a strong community concern about gambling practices in Australia, further there is a significant sense of "community responsibility" to limit the harm that addiction to gambling can have on the broader community.

The recent controversy surrounding the Tom Waterhouse affair has raised the level of community concern about gambling to an acute level, the support of senior and respected members of the media, community and government and the prompt introduction of legislation in relation to this matter has left the public wound open and receptive to furtherance of poker machine reforms.

The current tenor of public opinion has shifted to one of feeling beguiled by the club industry in their campaign to saturate the Australian media, mobilize the public and threaten the seats of sitting members prior to the last election and we now know that we have been "duped" by an industry intent on nurturing and fostering a potent and profitable addiction.

No one is suggesting abolition, just ways to stop people losing their lives, families, jobs and homes.

We need Federal, State and Territory sponsored legislation and regulation that focuses on prevention of addiction, support for those already addicted and education for our youth, who are set to become the next generation of gamblers.
 
We believe there is a strong community concern about gambling practices in Australia, further there is a significant sense of “community responsibility” to limit the harm that addiction to gambling can have on the broader community.
 
The award winning documentary Ka-Ching - Pokies Nation has raised the level of community concern about gambling to an acute level, we need reform. Australia has the highest incidence of poker machine losses per capita in the world. This should be a badge of shame for our legislators.
