Join GetUp's 2016 Election Campaign!

This election is about disrupting the influence big business has in our parliament. And it's about changing the power in our politics — taking it from controlling, hard-right factions, and giving it back to the voters and people who MPs should represent.

That's the only way we'll get rid of the billions in fossil fuel subsidies flowing to dirty energy companies and end their campaign to stifle renewable energy.

It's the only way we'll put an end to corporate tax dodgers robbing the wealth we need to fund our local hospitals and health system.

It's a really ambitious election plan, complete with door-knocking, phone banking, cutting edge ads and video products — all with GetUp members at the heart of it. We're ready and eager to make it a reality and get stuck in.

But to take the power back — and take on the likes of Rupert Murdoch and Gina Reinhart — we need your support. Will you please chip in a small, regular donation to fund our boldest election effort yet?

To take back the power, we need to give it all we've got. Are you in?
To give you an idea of the thinking that informed this strategy, let's look at what we're up against.

We've just had the hottest month on record. Ever. But our politicians are still pandering to the big coal and gas companies causing climate change.

That's because they take millions of dollars in donations from mining companies every year. It's no wonder we see major parties making decisions that put the interests of big companies ahead of the people they're meant to represent.

For example, the Government forks out billions of dollars in subsidies to fossil fuel companies — money we should be using to repower Australia with huge renewable projects where the sun shines brightest and the wind blows hardest.

Just last week, the Government flagged $9 billion in corporate tax cuts, when corporations are already dodging billions in tax each year, and one third of large companies pay no tax at all.

That's money that should be making up the funding shortfalls for our local schools and hospitals.

Our election strategy is about changing that. So here's how we'll take the power back.
This election, the GetUp community will be championing the issues that matter most to GetUp members.

As a movement, you voted - and this election our priorities are:

  • Stopping the enormous handouts to fossil fuel companies and instead pushing politicians to invest in big, ambitious renewable energy projects.
  • Ensuring our local hospitals and health services are properly funded and Medicare stays in public hands, so every Australian – no matter their income – can access the care they need, when they need it most.
  • And disrupting the power that big business has in our politics.
We'll rate candidates based on these issues — and many more.

Together, we'll make sure voters in electorates across the country know just where they stand when they get to the ballot box.

We'll put these issues front and centre on the political agenda with local candidates' forums, sophisticated door-knocking programmes, and community phonebanks to call in to the voters who matter most — and we'll be doing the edgy campaign advertising GetUp is famous for. This election, we'll go after the powerful bloc of politicians who are dragging our politics to the right and standing in the way of progress on the issues GetUp members care about.

They're the ones who do the bidding of big business, the coal lobby and right-wing groups like the Institute of Public Affairs — behind closed doors.

We'll come together to show that if you're blocking action on climate change and renewables, holding back fair economic reform or standing in the way of compassion and equality – the electorate won't stand for it. We'll do this through huge, grassroots campaigns on the ground in the electorates of those politicians we've identified as blockers. We'll back this up with a message tested, targeted advertising campaign including TV ads, billboards and radio.

We'll use this election to expose their hugely negative influence on the issues important to the GetUp community.

We'll also be campaigning hard in the Senate so that with a new voting system, every voter has everything they need to cast an informed vote.

That way, whoever wins government, the upper house can remain a house of review — keeping politicians in check on issues that matter the most to the GetUp community.

We'll be targeting the senate seats where we know we can have the most impact.
The support of small, regular donations enables GetUp to both plan strategically for the long-term, as well as respond to moments as they present themselves.

GetUp is completely independent of funding from governments and large corporations. As a result, our movement is entirely reliant on members like you chippping in what they can.
