Tell Macquarie to respect First Nations communities!

Australia's very own Macquarie Bank has some dirty secrets.

They're a major shareholder and broker of Empire Energy, the fracker who wants to drill across Aboriginal land in the Northern Territory.

And they're facilitating the same destruction across the sacred lands of the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe in Texas.

With their AGM around the corner, we have the perfect opportunity to deliver an international petition showing that people everywhere are watching.
From Texas to Borroloola
Let's create global pressure on Macquarie Bank to listen to First Nations communities here and overseas – sign the petition now!
Macquarie is a major shareholder of Empire Energy.1 Empire has a fracking permit area almost twice the size of Tasmania in the Northern Territory. This would destroy the lands, water, cultural heritage, and communities of several Traditional Owner nations and countries, who have staunchly been saying no to fracking on their lands for over a decade.

Macquarie Group CEO Shemara Wikramanayake spoke at their annual investment conference earlier this year, pledging to boost renewable lending and align itself with a net zero world by 2050. The International Energy Agency says we can't have new gas for net zero. And yet, Macquarie Bank are both shareholders and lenders to Empire Energy.

Here's a video telling you everything you need to know about Empire Energy and their plans to frack the NT:
Macquarie is not only funding destructive fracking projects here in Australia such as the Beetaloo Basin in the NT, but also overseas. The Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe of Texas has been speaking out against two LNG terminals proposed in South Texas on their sacred lands, one of which is called Rio Grande LNG, and it is assisted by Macquarie.

You can read more about the risks of the Rio Grande project in this report, or watch this video of chairman of Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe speaking at the Macquarie Bank AGM in 2019:

To the Executives of Macquarie Group:

United with First Nations leaders from the Northern Territory and Texas, we demand you respect and uphold the rights of Indigenous peoples by:

  • Following the United Nations international protocol and commit to Free, Prior and Informed Consent, including proper consultation with Traditional Owners from the Beetaloo Basin, and the Carrizo Comecrudo Tribe in Texas;
  • Withdrawing from the destructive Rio Grande LNG project in Texas;
  • Withdrawing your shareholdings in Empire Energy to prevent destruction in the Beetaloo Basin.
