Defend our ABC's independence!

Prime Minister Morrison is on the verge of handpicking the next ABC Chair – and one of the leading candidates is Greg Hywood – the man who gutted Fairfax newsrooms.

Even worse, Morrison's stacked the selection panel with an all-star line up of ex-liberal MPs and big business lobbyists.

We need to expose this sham process before it's too late. Can you sign the petition demanding an ABC Chair completely independent from Government?
Tell Morrison: no more interference at the ABC
To drive home the message for Scott Morrison and the Coalition, GetUp is also looking for a small team of GetUp members in marginal electorates to deliver a local version of this petition early in the new year.

You'll work with a handful of other local members to organise a time to deliver your petition, and sky's the limit on any media-grabbing stunts you'd like to add to the mix.

Does this sound like something you could do? Express your interest on the next page after signing the petition.

The Morrison Government handpicked recruitment agency Korn Ferry to be in charge of the selection process for the new ABC Chair.

And it's no wonder. The agency has strong links to Big Business and the Liberal party. Their chairperson is a former CEO of the Business Council of Australia.

And the person leading the search? He's a former Coalition MP.

As Chair of the ABC Board, Justin Milne should have protected ABC journalism from political interference, not lead the charge. But explosive leaks have revealed that Milne was effectively acting as an agent of the Coalition Government. In recent times he:

  • Tried to "get rid of" respected senior reporter Emma Alberici – after her reporting put the government's corporate tax handouts under scrutiny.
  • Told the ABC Managing Director to "shoot" ABC Political Editor Andrew Probyn, after Probyn criticised the government's choice of date for the July by-elections.
  • Attempted to stop Triple J from moving their popular Hottest 100 countdown from Australia day - because "Malcolm will go ballistic".

We need a strong, independent ABC Chair to stand up for the ABC and stamp out government interference.

The ABC's independence is integral to Australia's democracy.

Ex-ABC Chair Justin Milne trying to get rid of journalists who were critical of government policy, and interfering in ABC editorial policy in response to government pressure, is completely unacceptable.

He must now be replaced by a chair who is truly independent of government. The ABC must be free from any and all political interference and fully funded, so it can continue to deliver fearless reporting to the public.
