Save Our ABC!

Between funding cuts and a hostile Parliamentary review, the ABC is facing a storm of political attacks.1,2

Can you sign the petition to Save Our ABC from political interference and funding cuts? GetUp members holding placards with their messages of why they want to protect the ABC.
If we can get a massive petition in defence of our ABC in time, we can prove that these cuts are political poison, and can have consequences at the ballot box. GetUp members have helped lead the charge in defending our ABC before – and right now the threat is greater than ever.

Fearless journalism at the ABC should be fully protected from politically motivated attacks.

Sign the petition to Save Our ABC from political interference and funding cuts – and show politicians from all sides that attacking our ABC is off limits.

We need a strong, independent and fully funded ABC – but our national broadcaster has been dealt blow after blow.

In the most recent federal budget, the ABC has been hit with a devastating $84 million cut to their budget.1

These cuts follow Abbott's cuts in 2014, which slashed a whopping $254 million from the ABC.2

The union that represents ABC staff, the CPSU, issued a statement saying that 'staff are absolutely devastated by last night's announcement' and that the ABC 'has been slashed to the point now where it cannot meet its critical Charter obligations to serve all Australians'.3

Since these cuts began in 2014, the ABC has been forced to sack nearly 800 staff.4 It seems likely that these most recent budget cuts will mean that even more jobs are on the chopping block.

We need to save our public broadcaster from being gutted again and again by politically motivated budget cuts.

The review into the 'competitive neutrality' of the ABC and SBS was part of a deal struck between the Turnbull Government and Pauline Hanson's One Nation. While it's ostensible purpose is to see if the ABC has an unfair advantage over commercial outlets by virtue of being government funded (hint: the premise of this question is flawed), the scope of the investigation is much wider.

The review will give Hanson, the Coalition, the Murdoch Press and other free reign to drag the ABC's reporting through the mud, and political cover to attack its first rate journalism.1
