Breaking news: Wilson pulls out of offshore detention

Big news. After one solid year of campaigning, Wilson Security just pulled out of offshore detention.

They join Broadspectrum, the main companies who run the abusive camps on Nauru and Manus Island, who have committed to abandon their contracts when they run out in 2017. In other words, companies who were previously complicit in our abusive detention regime are running for the door.

The offshore detention system is falling apart around the government. While they're considering their next step, let's build the public pressure. Will you email Immigration Minister Dutton and tell him it's time to drop our abusive detention regime?

People power has fundamentally changed the way corporations see the offshore camps. The result? In 2015 corporations laughed in GetUp members' faces when we challenged their complicity in abuse, they were so sure their business model was rock-solid. But in 2016, they're announcing that running offshore detention camps just doesn't fit in with their "long term strategy priorities" – i.e., they're running for the door.

The Government has been left stranded, ignoring the reality that all camp operators have publicly withdrawn support.

The offshore detention policy has failed. 2000 people have been unlawfully imprisoned on these islands for nearly 3 years. The Papua New Guinea Government wants the camps closed, declaring the camps illegal. The pressure is mounting every day on Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Immigration Minister Peter Dutton. Now we need them to clue onto what's happening here – and bring the women, men and children on Manus Island and Nauru to safety in Australia.
