Morrison: Support the lifesaving COVID19 vaccine waiver

Big pharmaceutical corporations are controlling the world's vaccine rollout – refusing to allow countries in desperate need the ability to produce the COVID19 vaccine.
So over 100 countries around the world have come up with a solution to make sure every country can produce life-saving medicines for people suffering and dying of COVID19.

This waiver must be unanimously agreed to by all countries at the next World Trade Organisation (WTO) meeting on June 8.

But Prime Minister Morrison and Trade Minister Dan Tehan are sitting on the fence – and without their vote, the waiver can't pass.

Will you sign this petition demanding Morrison choose people over profits and support the vaccine waiver and share the technology for COVID-19 vaccines and treatments?
The TRIPS agreement, or Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights, is an intellectual property treaty of the World Trade Organisation that has been in force since 1995.

A TRIPS waiver was proposed by India and South Africa in 2020 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The waiver would involve a temporary suspension of certain TRIPS rules, including those concerning patents.

The main benefit of this waiver is said to be the increased availability of vaccines that would flow from the increased manufacturing capacity that would come with allowing other companies to manufacture the vaccine. It is also hoped that the waiver would encourage knowledge sharing and innovation required to adequately tackle the global pandemic.
South Africa and India initially put forward the waiver proposal – it has since been co-sponsored by over 60 WTO member states including Kenya, Eswatini, Mozambique, Pakistan, Bolivia, Venezuela, Mongolia, Zimbabwe, Egypt, the African Group, and the LDCs Group (Least Developed Countries) and ,most recently Maldives, Fiji, and Namibia.

The waiver also has the support of more than 120 countries. Notably, the European Parliament, the US and New Zealand have recently come out in favour of the proposal – in some form.

The TRIPS waiver must be supported unanimously at the WTO in order to take effect. This means Australia's support is vital.

SIGN THE PETITION

To Prime Minister Morrison and Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Dan Tehan

It shouldn't be up to big pharmaceutical corporations to decide who lives and who doesn't. Suspend the patent for the vaccine and share the technology for COVID-19 vaccines and treatments.
