Send Canstruct a message: back out of business in abuse

The government has been scrambling to find a contractor willing to run Australia's cruel detention centre on Nauru.

But news has broken that Minister Dutton had secretly made a deal with a new provider. The company? Brisbane-based construction and engineering firm Canstruct.

Last week, the firm was quietly awarded the lucrative garrison and welfare contract for the Nauru detention camp.

Reporting by Fairfax media has confirms that the company will receive $385 million dollars -- over one million dollars per day -- to operate the centre for 12 months, undertaking all activities at the camp including security, movement of refugees, food, clothing and welfare.

It's a clear sign that Dutton is going to do whatever he can to prop up his crumbling offshore detention regime -- and we need to act fast to urge Canstruct to walk away.

Can you contact Canstruct and urge them to walk away from Dutton's deal and his cruel regime?
  • These camps form part of Australia's system of arbitrary and indefinite detention that continues to be widely condemned by international human rights bodies.
  • The detention of people in arbitrary, indefinite detention, in utter secrecy is completely unacceptable. No company should be profiting from servicing these centres.
  • The Nauru Detention Centre has been found to be a human rights catastrophe where women have been assaulted, and children abused.
  • The Nauru Detention Centre currently houses 369 people, including children. But the 900 men on Manus Island were recently told they could volunteer to move to the Nauru detention centre.
  • It seems the government intends to consolidate all offshore refugees on Nauru, with Nauru being used as a prison island for years to come. Canstruct has signed a devil's bargain.
  • Canstruct will now not only be responsible for doing business in abuse, but will face a mighty campaign from thousands of Australians to whom the imprisonment and abuse of men, women and children is a disgrace.
