Light the Dark: what you helped make possible

In breaking news, the Coalition has agreed to provide 12,000 Syrian refugees with permanent safety in Australia.

This time last week, the Coalition was firm that they would not allow an increase in our humanitarian intake to respond to the global crisis. But between now and then, GetUp members and more than thirty other organisations across the refugee advocacy space mobilised in their tens of thousands to light the dark, and show the Governement that Australians say welcome to refugees. The public pressure worked, and we've seen an almost immediate backflip from the Government who will now offer safety and protection to 12,000 people – it's incredible!

Scroll down to see some amazing photos from Light the Dark across the country. This community action was galvanised by the collective heartbreak experienced last week, after we saw the image of 3 year old Aylan Kurdi's lifeless body washed up on a beach. See how we transformed grief and helplessness into action and impact.

We were able to pull this off only because we were able to act swiftly. If you are passionate about the fairer treatment of people seeking asylum, and if you are committed to continue to make a better world for refugees, will you set up a weekly donation to GetUp's refugee campaign to continue to resource the fight?

Become a core member, and your contribution will go towards:
  • Strong campaigns for refugees and asylum seekers - including getting kids out of detention, ensuring basic human rights are protected in Australian-run detention centres
  • Building pressure on politicians to up Australia's efforts to address on the world's worst refugee crisis since World War II
  • Making sure we can move fast and put GetUp members voices front and centre in critical moments – organising vigils and hitting headlines with the actions we take.
Will you sign up to become a core member, and keep the pressure up?
