Shut down Manus and Nauru

The year behind us isn't one many Australians are proud of.

In February, tensions between asylum seekers inside the Manus Island detention and PNG locals reached boiling point. Violence broke out in the detention centre, leaving many injured and one dead. Reza Berati, a 23-year old asylum seeker from Iran, died after being struck in the head.

In outrage and sorrow, Australians came together to grieve for Reza and his family, and the thousands who remain in detention.

GetUp and the Refugee Action Coalition will be delivering this petition, calling for the closure of the Manus Island and Nauru detention centres, to Parliament in the last sitting week. Will you add your name before it's delivered?

Reza and Hamid
Reza Berati and Hamid Kehazaei

We hoped Reza's death would be the wake up call our Government needed. Time went by, charges weren't laid, conditions didn't improve and innocent people still sat in limbo on Manus. The Government's inaction proved fatal for another young man from Iran, Hamid Kehazaei. The truly tragic thing about Hamid's death was that it was so preventable. He died from an infection that resulted from a cut on his foot.

Not long after Hamid's death, we heard allegations of sexual abuse inside the Nauru detention centre. This is the place which our Government has deemed suitable and safe to send women and young children.

Enough! Australians no longer want to see these injustices being perpetrated in our name. Sign on to call for a more compassionate Australia and demand the Government put an end to the shame that is Manus and Nauru, once and for all.

To the Immigration Minister Peter Dutton and Members of the Australian Senate,

The conditions inside the Manus Island and Nauru detention centres are cruel, unsanitary and unacceptable. The safety and wellbeing of people inside these facilities cannot be guaranteed, as shown time and time again.

We call on you to abide by Australia's international legal and humanitarian obligations, put an end to this shameful policy and close the Manus Island and Nauru detention centres now.
