Don't Mine the Tarkine!

Check out this beautiful video GetUp members made on their visit to the Tarkine and ask Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke not to fast-track its destruction using the tool on the right.
Wondering what to write?

Your submission needn't take more than a minute to write, and short comments are fine.

Make it clear that you are commenting on the two mines being proposed by Venture Minerals. It's helpful to include the reference numbers for the projects; they are 2012/6342 and 2012/6339.

Here are some points you might like to make:
  • The two mines are proposed in areas that have been assessed by the Australian Heritage Council as being worthy of National Heritage listing. This listing should urgently be reinstated, and the proposals assessed accordingly.
  • The Tarkine is the second largest cool temperate rainforest left in the world.
  • The Tarkine is home to more than 60 species of rare, threatened and endangered species, including the Tasmanian Devil and the largest freshwater lobster in the world.
  • These are two iron ore mines and would only operate for two years, but in that short time the values of the Tarkine could be irreversibly damaged.
  • The coastal region of the Tarkine has been described as "one of the world's great archaeological regions" due to the richness and diversity of Aboriginal sites – many of which date back thousands of years.

Take action

Right now the Federal Government is deciding how they will assess two new mines proposed in the Tarkine wilderness of Tasmania.

Send Federal Environment Minister Tony Burke a message calling him to put in place the National Heritage listing for the Tarkine and do a proper assessment instead of fast-tracking before the public comment closes in less than a week!
