Save Science

After failing to pass his unpopular higher education bill, Education Minister Christopher Pyne's attempt to hold the future of Australia's scientific capabilities hostage has backfired.

With the Senate seeing the sense in science, Mr. Pyne has agreed to back down on his dangerous and shortsighted threat to Australia's scientific innovation. Now, 27 world class research facilities and 1,700 jobs are secure for another year.

While science is safe for today, Minister Pyne's threat has shone a light on a deeper problem - the instability of long term funding for scientific research. Funding for science should never be used as a bargaining chip in political games. It should be secure, so that innovation is able to truly thrive in Australia.
