Call for clean energy — not a new tax on electric vehicles

Treasurers in Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales are trying to sneak in a new tax on electric vehicles (EVs), penalising drivers for not polluting.

Transport is the second largest source of climate pollution and the fastest growing. Unless we take action, our outdated cars and transport system will become the biggest source of climate pollution in just five years.

Australia already has the lowest electric vehicle uptake of any comparable country, and this would make us the only country putting a new tax on clean cars, while the rest of the world provides incentives to accelerate uptake!

VIC, NSW and SA have been huge champions of our clean energy future — just last month VIC announced one of the most ambitious budgets for clean energy yet!

We need MPs across VIC, NSW and SA to hear outcry against this idea right now — so we can strike it down before it passes Parliament.

Will you email your state MP to congratulate them on Victoria's clean energy wins but ask them to oppose the electric vehicles tax?
This is being driven by the private roads lobby: companies like Transurban who build private roads. Their interest is more roads, more cars, more profits.

They're worried that with fuel excise revenue falling as cars use less petrol, there will be less funding for their new roads. However, fuel excise has not been tied to infrastructure spending since 1959, so this is a fallacy.

State Treasurers have sniffed an opportunity to create a new state revenue stream, to replace fuel excise, which is a federal tax. They think it's impolitic to tax all cars, but think they can get away with slogging electric vehicles (EV) before there are many EV drivers.

This "EV Tax" would make every electric vehicle owner pay over $400 a year extra, just for not polluting. With your help, we can stop it in its tracks!
The public interest is to breathe clean air and get around with a well-designed transport system, where people can walk, cycle, catch fast, comfortable public transport, as well as drive efficient, non-polluting cars.

Australia has among the lowest uptake of EVs in the world, with 0.6% of new car sales being electric, compared to 4.9% in China, 2.1% in the US, 3.2% in Europe, and 2.6% worldwide. While all these countries offer financial support for electric vehicles, averaging around $10,000 AUD per new car, Australia offers nothing.

Getting to net zero climate pollution in our transport sector means electrifying transport, shifting more private vehicle trips to public, active and shared transport, shifting freight from road to rail, and making smart decisions about new automated driving technology.

You don't need to be an electric vechicle policy expert or a brilliant wordsmith to stand up for clean transport and make an impact. What's important is that your message comes from the heart, and that your MP hears it from constituents like you!

Here are some tips on how to write your email:

  • Introduce yourself: Your MP will be far more receptive if they know you're a constituent. Tell them a bit about yourself! Where do you live? What do you do?

  • Talk about why clean transport matters to you:
    • Are you worried about the future of our climate?
    • Are you concerned about the impact of polluting cars on our health?
    • Feel free to draw from some of the information on this page about why this electric vechicles tax is such a bad idea, and be sure to make it as personal as you can.

  • Be polite: VIC has made leaps and bounds in the clean energy transition. Regardless of which party your MP is from, they'll be more responsive to your email if you're polite and encouraging.

  • Ask them to take action: Each vote is crucial in stopping the electric vehicles tax – and you should make that known. Tell them how important their vote is to VIC and the future of our health, jobs, and climate.

If you're not in VIC, head to this page to email your MP in SA, or this page to email your MP in NSW.

Australian drivers are stuck with unnecessarily polluting cars, costing more in petrol and maintenance. Pursuing policies that encourage clean transport should be our priority, not spruiking polluting vehicles that harm our health and dirty our air.

I support clean energy leadership, not a new tax on electric vehicles! As your constituent, I call on you to oppose the proposed electric vehicles tax. Speak out in your party room and publicly. VIC is leading some game-changing policies to support clean energy, so a new electric vehicles charge makes no sense.
