Push back against gas industry lies!

New proposed legislation would see climate pollution dumped under the seabed.1
Article headline tearout from The Guardian, 30 June 2023: Australian sea dumping law changes condemned amid warnings of gas industry expansion
This is the kind of government support the gas industry has lobbied for, and would allow them to prop up their Beetaloo Basin fracking and controversial Middle Arm gas hub.

But there's a Senate inquiry underway right now into this disastrous plan, with submissions closing this Thursday. Which means we have less than 48 hours to get a hard-hitting, evidence-based submission lodged to the committee.

There's nothing stronger than a fool-proof submission that's backed in by a movement of people demanding more from their government.

There is currently a Senate inquiry underway into this new legislation. They are seeking public submissions, which close this Thursday.

The inquiry is by the Senate Environment and Communications Legislation Committee into the Environment Protection (Sea Dumping) Amendment (Using New Technologies to Fight Climate Change) Bill 2023 [Provisions]

Submissions are an opportunity for everyday people to contribute to our democracy, and give feedback on the issues that matter most to us. This inquiry and submission process is no different. It's clear this legislation would enable more fracking and climate pollution.

GetUp's climate team is working with lawyers, policy experts, and allies from across the grassroots and climate sector to inform a thorough submission for the inquiry. With just 48 hours until submisisons close, we are up against the wire to get this submission done. Here's what it will cover:
  • Traditional Owner opposition to gas projects set to benefit from these laws,
  • How gas expansion is in conflict with the Albanese Government's climate promises,
  • How gas corporations use sea dumping to greenwash their polluting projects - despite the process failing to live up to their lofty promises.

We are deeply concerned that the Albanese Government is supporting the gas industry’s dangerous expansion plans with this Sea Dumping legislation. Traditional Owners are saying no to fracking in the Beetaloo Basin and no to the Middle Arm gas hub, which would benefit from these laws.

We urge the Parliament to prioritise protecting water and sacred sites at risk from gas expansion with a water trigger in environmental laws and strong national cultural heritage legislation.
