Millions of cubic metres of sea floor are being dredged up from the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area to make way for massive new coal seam gas export facilities. It's the largest dredging project ever undertaken in Australia, and one that has the United Nations' Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) so alarmed they're warning the Reef could lose its iconic world heritage status.
During their investigative trip to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park this week, UNESCO representatives are meeting with a range of stakeholders: scientists, environment groups, state government, fishing and tourism industry representatives, local councils and mining companies. It's a comprehensive list, all with an interest in the Reef, but one group's missing -- the Australian community.

The Great Barrier Reef doesn't just matter to mining companies, governments or tourism agencies. It's a place that matters to us all, and the UNESCO World Heritage Committee is charged with its protection. Sign the petition to stand up to the mining industry and protect the area from development.
