Thanks to the incredible work of our GetUp community and our partners, the government has officially backed down on its plans to weaken FOI laws.

This is a huge win for transparency, accountability, and the GetUp community.

Labor is proposing drastic new restrictions on Freedom of Information (FOI) requests – including the blanket refusal of many requests.

This would destroy one of the only tools we have to hold governments to account. It's the biggest attack on transparency in decades – and not what Labor should be doing with their record majority.

It's not just GetUp raising the alarm. The Greens and crossbench MPs have spoken out against Albanese's plans. So has Sussan Ley and the Coalition. Former Senator Rex Patrick has too.
