Whistleblowers are the backbone of transparency and accountability – democracy can't function without them, nor good journalism, nor anti-corruption efforts. And yet, Australian whistleblower protection laws are woefully inadequate.
Instead of being applauded for speaking out against wrongdoing, everyday people face criminal charges, mountains of legal debt, and often blacklisting in their profession.
The cost is simply too high. And that's why GetUp made this film.
We all know what needs to change – experts, advocates, the Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus, and even his Coalition predecessor, Christian Porter, agreed.1
But with two men facing jail time right now for whistleblowing, reform can't wait.2
Public pressure has already led the Attorney-General to intervene in the whistleblowing case of Bernard Collaery, Witness K's lawyer. But the Attorney-General has stopped short of dropping prosecutions against other whistleblowers.3
So we're ramping up the pressure. Armed with this film, together we can shine a spotlight on exactly why reforms are so desperately needed – and turn up the heat on the government with a message they can't ignore.
