The Government is trying to fast-track the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef, and they don't want you to know about it.

Environment Minister Greg Hunt has given a ludicrously short window for the public to comment on plans to dump millions of cubic metres of dredge spoil on a Great Barrier Reef wetland.

If approved, construction in the wetlands could begin as early as January 2.

It's time for our Government to stop fast-tracking the destruction of the Great Barrier Reef.

Dredging will harm the reef

The dredging operation will wipe out nearly 100 hectares of seagrass that provides food for endangered turtles and dugongs. The dredging will muddy the water with sediment and smother nearby seagrass beds.

The Caley Valley Wetlands are an important part of the Reef ecosystem - they're a natural filter for the reef, and a breeding ground for turtles, as well as many species of fish and endangered migratory birds.

Dumping will harm the wetlands and the reef

The dumping and construction of spoil storage ponds, pipeline, and a railway corridor around the wetlands could have serious impacts on the wetlands and the reef. Dumping in the Caley Valley Wetlands represents an unacceptable threat to the breeding and nesting grounds for the 40, 000 waterbirds that live or visit there, including the endangered Painted Snipe. The dumped sediment would directly wipe out 114 hectares of foraging habitat for birds. There's a risk that the bund wall could be breached, carrying sediment and acid soils into the Reef, as we saw before in Gladstone Harbour.
