Victory! Grandpa Mark vs the Government

Great news – the Turnbull Government's done a big backdown on their threat to sue Grandpa Mark.

66-year-old Sydney grandfather, Mark Rogers, was under threat for using the Medicare name and logo on his Save Medicare website. A government, bitter over their losses in the election, tried to shut him down.

But Grandpa Mark stood firm in the face of the Turnbull Government's petty bullying. Then you and tens of thousands of other GetUp members stepped up in solidarity.

And it worked. A new legal letter from the Solicitor General's office backed off its threats and even apologised for the concern caused.1

Their backdown shows just what people power can do. We need to use that power to keep fighting the attacks on our world-class Medicare, just like Grandpa Mark, so Medicare is still there for all of us.

Take a quick moment to share this epic win on Facebook to remind the Turnbull Government that Grandpa Mark's people-powered victory is just the first step.

Here's what we did together to stand with Granda Mark and defend our universal public health system from the Turnbull Government's attacks:
  • 37,464 of us signed a petition calling for the Turnbull Government to back off.
  • 3,591 GetUp members contacted their local Coalition MP calling for the Turnbull Government to drop their threats.
  • And 741 more stood with Mark Rogers by repeating his supposed offence -- using a handy GetUp tool to create a Facebook image with the Medicare colours and wording.
Mark Rogers said this backdown is a "great credit to your collective efforts, thank you."

Legend that he is, Mark isn't backing down, even now -- committing to ensure the government isn't threatening other individuals and community groups with similar legal action. Not to mention that Grandpa Mark will still be there to campaign to Save Medicare, for all of us -- let's make sure he's never alone.

Let's share this win for people power so that the Turnbull Government never tries to silence dissent against cuts to Medicare again.

Stay tuned for the next steps to protect Medicare and our universal public health system, but make sure you take a moment to savour this huge win for people power.

Thanks for making this possible, Nat, Ruby, Daney, Django, and Mark (no, not that Mark) for the GetUp team
