Immigration Minister Peter Dutton has announced changes that will devastate multicultural and migrant communities:

The changes include:
  • Requiring migrants seeking citizenship to undertake a university-level English language test - which many Australian-born citizens would fail;
  • Requiring migrants to demonstrate that they are 'integrating' into Australian society , a discriminatory measure that citizens born in Australia are not subject to;
  • Extending the permanent residency requirements of anyone currently seeking citizenship to 4 years, creating greater uncertainty;
  • Requiring a test about 'Australian Values', which even the Prime Minister struggled to explain.
Minister Dutton has suggested these changes despite no evidence that they are needed, and with no regard for the harm and discrimination they will create towards those seeking to make Australia home. Many people now face years of fees, waiting and uncertainty in their attempts to become full and equal members of our community.

But, if public opinion surges against these changes, and the Opposition and cross-bench take a stand, these changes will not become a reality.
