To the Albanese Government:

We are deeply concerned by special envoy Jillian Segal AO's new plan to combat antisemitism.

Jewish Australians are facing real threats: harassment, violence, and attacks on places of worship. But instead of addressing these dangers, the plan proposes:

  • Policing criticism of Israel through a flawed definition of antisemitism
  • Undermining media independence by targeting the ABC and other outlets
  • Empowering the government – and an unelected envoy – to strip funding from universities, charities, and cultural institutions
  • Expanding deportation powers for people with so-called "extremist" views

This approach risks silencing dissent, undermining civil liberties, and deepening racism and division – rather than building true safety for the Jewish community and other communities targeted by hate. Real safety comes from standing together against all forms of hate and racism. It comes from strengthening democracy, protecting human rights and civil liberties, and ensuring everyone can speak out and live without fear.

We stand with Jewish Australians and all communities targeted by hate. We call on the Albanese Government to:

  • Scrap this deeply flawed plan
  • Work to combat racism in all its forms, including by implementing the recommendations contained in the Australian Human Rights Commission's National Anti-Racism Framework
  • Protect civil liberties, freedom of expression and media independence

Australia urgently needs real solutions to address hate, protect communities and uphold democratic values. This plan fails that test.
