Go Greener with GreenPower

At Better Power, we're all about helping people make the greenest possible choices for their household energy. That's why we encourage our switchers to make the move to GreenPower once they've signed up with Powershop.

Already, over 3000 GetUp members have bought GreenPower, driving an extra 4393 MWh of renewable energy into the electricity grid.

Log in to your account and buy GreenPower to add more renewable energy to the grid every time you turn the lights on!

What is GreenPower?

GreenPower is a government-accredited program that adds extra renewable energy into the grid, displacing all (or some) of your electricity usage with renewable energy.

That means if you buy 100% GreenPower you'll have peace of mind knowing that for all the power you use, the equivalent amount will be pulled into the grid from a 100% renewable energy source.

The best thing about GreenPower is that it is additional to the government's Renewable Energy Target, so your household or business will be at the forefront of supporting renewable energy in Australia and driving our progress to a clean energy future.

GreenPower costs a little extra – an additional 6c per kilowatt-hour with Powershop – but if you can afford it it's a great way to give direct support to renewable energy and show the entire industry you're serious about helping clean up the sector.

How do I buy GreenPower?

To get GreenPower at a 16% discount in NSW, or 30% discount in Victoria:

  1. Log in to your Powershop account.
  2. Click on 'Shop'
  3. Click on the 'GetUp Green Online Saver' icon and select 'Add' for the units you want to purchase (e.g. 30, 150 or 300). If you look at your bill, you can see how many units you owe, and then you can buy that amount of GreenPower units to pay your bill. For example, if your bill is 100 units, to buy 100% GreenPower you just select 100 units when buying power
  4. All done. Pat yourself on the back for helping to drive renewable energy investment!

This is what it looks like online:
Or on the mobile app:

With Powershop you can buy as much or as little GreenPower as you like. For example, you may want to only purchase 50 percent GreenPower, in which case you'd select 50 units from GetUp Green Online Saver and 50 units from the grey 'Online Saver' power. It's up to you.

Each month, Powershop will send you a reminder email to top up. This way you'll know know when your bill is due and can log in beforehand. If you don't want to log in every month, you can set it to purchase GreenPower by default at Powershop's standard rate. How do I set my Default Power Pack to GreenPower.

You won't get the full discount without logging in each month, but doing this will ensure that your power is still 100% GreenPower.

To set GreenPower as your Default Power Pack:

  1. Click on 'Settings' (or 'Go to My Account' then 'Settings')
  2. Click on 'Account Preferences'
  3. Under "Default Power Pack" select Green Standard Saver.

REMEMBER: Only the Green Standard Saver can be set as a default. If you want to receive the above discounted rates you'll need to log in each month and purchase the Green Online Saver as above.

Frequently Asked Questions

GreenPower is a government-accredited scheme to encourage more renewable energy in Australia's energy grid. It's one of the best things you can do through your household power consumption to reduce your environmental impact and encourage more renewable energy to be added directly into the grid.

That's because when you purchase GreenPower, it compels your retailer to purchase more renewable energy certificates (RECs) on your behalf from renewable energy generators, effectively driving more renewable energy into the grid.

Retailers already have to buy a certain number of RECs from renewable energy generators as part of their obligations under the government's Renewable Energy Target, but GreenPower compels them to purchase certificates over and above the mandated level. This is great, because it adds more renewable energy into the system than would be there without GreenPower, and it helps show Australians are demanding electricity that comes from cleaner, safer and more sustainable sources.

With Powershop, GreenPower costs an additional 6c per kWh above your normal rate (i.e. 6c/kWh inc. GST).

An average home off the eastern seaboard grid uses around 5,817 kWh per year, which means if an average householder purchased 100% GreenPower they would pay around $355 extra per year, or around $6.80 a week. This is about the price of two cups of coffee, and will ensure that your entire energy consumption is completely displaced by an equivalent amount of renewable energy being added into the grid on your behalf.

Of course, reducing your household electricity consumption is the best thing you can do to bring down your power bill as well as your carbon footprint, which means the costs of GreenPower will be much lower for those who use less energy than average and those who have energy efficient lifestyles and appliances.
Powershop is owned by Meridian Energy, a 100% renewable energy generator that owns and operates two wind farms in Australia – the Mt Mercer wind farm in Victoria and the Mt Millar wind farm in South Australia.

Powershop satisfies the bulk of their obligations under the Renewable Energy Target and the GreenPower scheme by purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates from the Mt Mercer and Mt Millar wind farms.

This means that when you select'Green Standard Saver' or GetUp's 'Green Online Saver', the renewable energy added into the grid on your behalf will come from either the Mt Millar or the Mt Mercer wind farms. From time to time however, Powershop will also purchase certificates from other renewable energy generators on the open market. This means that occasionally in their online shop you will have the option of purchasing your GreenPower from other sources apart from Powershop's wind energy.
Buying GreenPower products is one of the best thing households can do to encourage more renewable energy to be added directly into Australia's electricity grid.

We understand that not everyone can afford GreenPower products, but even if you can't buy GreenPower, participating in the Better Power campaign still strongly benefits renewable energy.

Buying Powershop's standard offer does not directly increase the amount of renewable energy in the grid, but it does ensure the carbon footprint from your household energy supply is offset through UN-certified offset schemes. Powershop is the only retailer in Australia that offsets the emissions of its customers, as well as its own operating emissions, at no extra cost to you.

Also, while the generation arms of companies like AGL, Origin and EnergyAustralia are heavily invested in fossil fuels including coal and CSG, Powershop's parent company Meridian is a 100% renewable energy generator, with commitments to only ever invest in renewables and never in fossil fuels like coal or coal seam gas.

Supporting companies that do the right thing by consumers and the environment is the best way to force the other companies in the market to change. This is because even small numbers of switchers can have a big effect on the companies they leave behind. In fact, a recent Credit Suisse report into the Better Energy campaign suggested if the movement could shift 30,000 customers away from AGL it would have an impact of $100 million on the company's bottom line – a big enough dent to make them reconsider their investment in CSG, coal and other fossil fuels.

Everyone who switches is also adding their voice to a growing movement of more than 12,000 people demanding real change in Australia's energy market, with Better Power also reaching out to market leaders and policy-makers through petitions, social media campaigning and grassroots community action against dirty energy production and fossil fuel investment.

Finally, every person who signs up is supporting GetUp's campaigns for renewable energy and against coal seam gas and dirty coal, through a commission paid by Powershop to GetUp at no cost to the consumer. So far, Better Power switchers have contributed an amazing $1.2 million to causes they are passionate about through this commission, and every new switcher is directly helping our campaigns with much-needed funding.
